Any tips for smoking just the flat?

Will be seasoning the smoker tomorrow...
According to my manual it just says to coat with oil to season it. I assume it would be recommended to do a burn off first?- Pacotito

Just got it assembled. I didnt like how the coal tray sits in the ash pan. So im going to hang it with plumbers strap. That way i dont need to remove the whole thing to clean the ash tray.
