Smoke Hollow 44

I just bought the SH 44" from Home Depot. On the site I thought I was buying the one with solid black door but I received the one with glass door. Between the glass door vs the solid black door. Does anybody know if one is better than the other? Thanks.

Had thought that the glass door one was a custom build for Sam's Club, which is the only place I have ever seen them.    Funny thing is, Sam's is $100+ cheaper.

 

Can't comment as to which is better, solid v. glass, or if the doors are the only difference between the two.     I have the glass door one from Sams and I'm loving it.

Yeah, you're right. I got it for $400 from Home Depot. I got mine as a Christmas gift from my wife. I haven't tried it yet but I read lots of post's here about Smoke Hollow and can't wait to try it. Thanks for the reply.

I got one for Christmas too. Curious about the temperature range the burner(s) can produce.

How long have you had your smoker? Does the glass door fogs up or stained from the smoke?

I've been doing my own research about the SMH and found on youtube and posts here. Hope this helps. If I find any more link I'll post more on here.

I can dial it down to under 200 or take it up over 400 depending on a number of factors.

yeah, it gets stained from smoke.  Haven't bothered with cleaning it yet.

Had my smoke hollow since November and the lowest i can get it to with 30 deg. ambient temp is about 180. bought mine at Sams, has the glass window.Smoked 5 or 6 times in mine just letting the window build up resin cause i figure that if nothing else i can use a razor blade on it and put the scrapings in bean soup for flavor {not}:wife: I got mine for $275 from Sam's club. The best advice I can give you is to use foil for your wood pan instead of the factory cover. I use chunks instead of chips you just got to get them thin enough to fit under the water pan. a pan of chunks lasts about 3 hours in mine setting over a burner on low. I set 1 burner on low for the wood pan and then try to regulate temp. with the other burner.

I can place my 1500 watt hot plate inside instead of using propane for lower temps. Will have to play with it.

I'm not sure if he's running his as low as it will go.   You can light one burner and turn the dial up to HIGH.   Then, PUSH the dial in and slowly turn it towards OFF position.  This will give you a flame that is lower that the flame on the LOW setting.   You just have to play with it a bit and make sure that you have a steady/consistent (but very low) flame.

I ditched the wood trays and have gone with an AMNTS Tube Smoker and pellets from Amazenproducts. 

 

Also, if you don't have a remote Thermometer like a Maverick, you might want to look into getting one.

 

 

Hope you have fun with the SH44.   This thing can put out a stupid amount of food  :)

They're great.   When I first started using my SH44,  I had troubles with chips flaming up too often, and/or chunks burning too fast for my liking.   Didn't know about Wolfman's method of covering chunks with tin foil either.   Instead, I got the AMNTS and once I figured out placement in my smoker, I've been very happy with it.    I fill it up and light it and it burns for close to 6 hours.   If I'm doing a longer smoke, before it burns down, I load more pellets in and it starts burning it's way back for another 6 hours.    Cuts down quite a bit on the babysitting.

You got me thinking..... Wonder if I can make some sort of tube like that using hardware cloth? Maybe a test project for today....

I haven't done it that often, or for long periods of time, but no, it's never blown out on me.
