Hello all. I am the newbie here and need someone to point me to a reliable/ accurate meat thermometer for around $ 20-40. I have a newer "Good House Keeping" digital - newer and works good - somewhat accurate, but what I don't know is if an new one in that price range is any better. Any help here?

Probably the most popular around here is the Maverick ET-732, http://www.amazenproducts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MAVET-732  it is a great little therm. It has 2 probes, 1 for the meat and 1 for the smoker temp and has a remote so you can monitor temps from another location, like on the couch watching the game. I have a ET-73 which is very similar but a little less but I wish I had got the 732 which has longer probe wires and supposed to have a longer range. The Mav is probably the best thing I have for smoking, well except my smoker, temps are everything and this has made such a difference.

Definatley the ET-732 is the only way to go in my opinion also, I have 2 of them and they are awesome!! It is a little more than you are looking to spend, but well worth the price. I purchased 2 cheaper models prior to these and they ended up in the trash! Spend the extra money upfront and save a few bucks in the longrun!

I've used dozens in that price range, there really isn't a great one.
They all have certain issues.
Even the ET-732 has it's issues. (I have 2 of them.)

I wish that someone would make a reliable feature rich therm at a reasonable price.

That's kinda my point/ question. Until you get up between 75 - 100 $ they all have problems. Some arne't waterproof, or read at 10 seconds, etc.I actually have 2, one is an Kitchen aid oven thermometer with a long probe - works great for smoker temp at the grate pushed thru a ball of tin foil. And the other is the meat thermometer I mentioned earlier - I don't want to replace it if I am not spending 80 bucks or so. Call me cheap, but all of them have an error factor.

Update - I just looked at the ET-732 on Amazon. Not what I am after - I am looking for the "Stick" type that have a read out on the handle - something like the RT600C  for 20.00. They get great reviews for the price point.

Ok, Thermometer issue is done for now. I ordered the Comark Waterproof Digital Thermometer, -58° - 300°F from Amazon. It's actually made by Fluke ( they make alot of my work equip. and I trust them) and it is dishwasher safe i.e. waterproof. The ET-732 didn't have the portability I wanted and had bad reviews on alot of different sites. My other one is the style of the ET-732 so I think I will be OK with both. Then I can start learning the right way. Thanks for all the input.
