Wood cut with chainsaw

Chainsaws use oil to lubricate the chain. Is wood purchased commercially cut with chainsaws? It seems that that wood should be avoided.

I use vegetable oil in my chainsaw

I really doubt the miniscule amount of oil that could be on the cut lumber poses any risk. I know I wont loose sleep over it

On a side note, Many people do not know but BHA and BHT are petroleum derivatives

Probably should be avoided if a choice is available. I had a peach tree branch and used a reciricating and a chop saw to make chunks.

And, Sodium and Chlorine, both very toxic, are derivitves of table salt.

Then avoid it if you are concerned, but I don't know how you would know for sure.

Exactly and you may be ingesting both of these items almost on a daily basis with no harm.

Some chainsaws throw a lot more oil off the chain than others, but the vast majority of the oil that comes off ends up in the saw dust, not on the cut wood. If the wood is then split, the amount of oil on the ends is miniscule. I would wager that compared to the other carcinogens that you are soaking your meat in when you smoke it that it really does not make that much difference.

My overall take on it is if any of us were really that concerned about health we would not be eating friggin' BBQ in the first place.

I guess we should all stick to Kingsford and Lighter fluid. Wouldnt want to have any bar oil in our Oak or Maple.

I would bet most folks have a 1000% better chance of getting mauled by their own chainsaw instead of getting sick from bar oil on the wood chunks. I don't worry about it.

I did not know that you could use vegitable oil instead of normal bar oil.....guess I never really thought about it either tho.....

Chainsaw carvers use Veggie oil when cutting or carving on federal or state land.

I would recommend if someone wanted to use a chainsaw to make their own sawdust for an AMNS, they should use Veggie oil.

However I wouldn't think regular bar & chain oil would be a big deal with what it leaves on the crosscut of a log, and then that log being out in the sun & weather for a year being seasoned before using it for smoking.
