Whole Chicken Smoking Rub????

I have already found some great ideas on here for chicken rubs, but I do have a question. Do you put the rub on the skin or under the skin? Or both? Or butter under the skin and rub on the skin? Orrrrr just try every possible combination once and see what I like the best? :)  Any rules on this?

Smoking tomorrow so pics will be up then.

you can do it however you like..rub on the skin or under..its all about what works and tastes the best for you..i usually do it beer can style and rub a lil EVOO on the bird and hit it with rub on the skin..chicken is not that expensive so pick up 2 of them and try it both ways...don't forget to watch the internal temp of the bird 165 for the breast meat.don't forget to post some pic's.. enjoy and good luck.
 
I rub both skin and under the skin and some in the cavity too

I have to say a big "Thank you" to everyone! The chicken turned out great. It was flavorful and moist and didn't last very long! And here is a pic of the finished product. Sorry for the poor quality of the pic.
