Probably somewhere in the huge archive is the answer I'm lookin' for but I've been readin' till my eyes want to pop out. I'm going to make all the recommended mods you fine folks have learned over the yrs. Take one day and just go through CG and do everything. Is there a particular brand, model number, etc that is best suited for putting 2 therms as close to grate level as possible. Any links would be greatly appreciated...

Also, can the original therm be relocated for use or is it basically inaccurate no matter where it's at, and, why aren't any therms placed grate level on the backside of the cooking chamber?

I like the Teltru BQ300, 3 inch dial and 4 inch stem. American made, stainless steel case. It's not the cheapest out there but I like the quality.

You'll need a backing nut or you can buy the installation kit.

Probably not worth trying to relocate the original thermo.

The reason companies don't put dual therms at grate level is probably cost I would assume.

You are doing everything else from the front side, so you want your therm where you can read them without a lot of extra effort. In windy conditions, you often need to use a wall, etc behind the grill for a wind break. Rear mounted therms would be very difficult if not impossible to read then. The other reason that comes to mind, is a lot of people store their grills in a garage, storage building, etc when not in use. Without a rear shelf to act as a bumper, so to speak, rear mounted therms could be subject a lot of abuse when moving the grill around.
