We have a Golden Retriever that has always had allergies. One thing that has always been a pain until now is getting him to take down large antibiotic pills. We have tried many different ways including just stuffing them down his throat. We first tried stuffing the pills in bread, then in chicken and other meats but he quickly would figure it out and either refuse to eat it or find a way to shake his face and spit it out.

If this happens to you I have found a product that solves all of that. Greenies pill pockets. They are a soft pill holding treat that is malleable enough to hold even a large pill. You mold it around the pill and my dog will gobble them down every time. No more shoving it down his throat and hoping he wont spit it out.

If your furry friends have a problem taking in pills this is the best thing I have found. I bought them from amazon.

Those work great, but I'm cheap, so I wrap the pill in a half of a slice of, the singles. If the dog wises it up to it, I give them the half without the pill first, then quickly sub in the half that has the pill in it.

We use the pill pockets too... but did find an allergy pill on the floor lately... think our Dobie spit it out! Had a dog that has passed but my wife went through half a package of hot dogs and he still hadn't taken his pill... boy was she mad! Me laughing probably didn't help!

I've always used peanut butter. Just make sure you get them hooked on it first. Then it's like crack.
Back when I was a young kid I had some elderly neighbors with a beautiful Eskimo Spitz named Nikki. Nikki developed an on going problem that required daily meds. They fought with her for a while and tried everything they could think of. Then it stuck them. Nikki loved hot dogs. They started giving her a small bite and then hide the pill in the next bite. Got to the point Nikki would even remind them if they were late giving her the pill.

I just chuck the pill way back in their throat and hold their mouth shut till they swallow.

Any and all attempts to hide the pill in any pill pocket, or other food just results in them taking the treat and spitting the pill on the floor.

Our dog could snatch snacks out of the air. So we hid them in a small chunk of cheese, and just tossed them to her.
That's the trick Mike. Don't give them a chance to think about it with a hand feed.
Works ever better if you have multiple animals. No way are they letting the other get a chance at the treat.

Unfortunately these are rather large capsule pills so they can't be cut in half.

We have tried beef, chicken, cheese, bread and peanut butter. It might work for one or two pills but then he figures it out and has this weird thing where he separates the pill from the food then shakes his head and spits it out the side of his mouth.

Cramming them down his throat is a PITA. Goldens are big dogs with big mouths.

The pill pockets work great. Almost thru a hole bag and he hasn't spit any out so far. I made this post in case any other pups are problem children with pills. I didn't even know they existed until 2 weeks ago.

We were always lucky. When our dogs required a prescription we could always get them in liquid form and use the plunger to just shoot it right down the throat.

definitely can see the need for these, especially for bigger (nastier?) pills
