When you do a double seal on vac bags do you do the second seal in front of the first seal towards the open end ??

Or do you seal on the back side of the first seal towards the food side ??

Reason I'm asking... I took two packs of vacuum packed fish (one snook and one grouper fillets) out of the freezer to thaw.. After thawed I see that both packs lost their vacuum/seal.. And they were both double sealed... Don't remember which way I did it though... I'm using food saver bags and a Inkbird sealer... I would use my Food Saver sealer but it's automatic so you have to push the bag in far enough to initiate the process... This leaves about a 1" tab (so to speak)... I would have to trim some off (PIA) to make it go in further past the first seal to make the second seal... A second seal in front of the first is not an option with the Food Saver sealer as I can't make the tab longer...

So do y'all have a preferred method on this ??

I double seal both ends: Seal, cool, 2nd seal about 1/4" in front of the previous. Flip and repeat on the other end.

I do similar except I seal the food side first, let it cool the do the outside on both ends.

Isn't there a correct way to seal? Smooth side UP and bumpy side down. Maybe you did it the wrong way?

NEVER had one leak/break seal yet and I only single bag 'em.

I've been getting the presealed bags lately to speed up sealing and knowing the factory sealed end should be good. After I seal the other end, I'll sometimes add a second seal closer to the end of the bag.

I've never had to make a second seal with my Food Saver, but if I did it would be in front of the first seal(towards the open end). Seal it then turn off the vacuum, push the bag into the machine far enough to trigger the seal starter and pull the bag out a 1/4 inch or so and seal it again.

I've only had one bad seal and that was on homemade Chex-mix.

Same here with my Food saver. Pretty rare for a seal to fail for me although I've had a couple. Especially true if I make sure to wipe the area clean if it gets any debris from loading the bag with contents prior to sealing.

I only use premade bags. sealing both ends doubled my issues. I also always set it to wet (not dry) as the heat stays on longer. Nearly never lose the seal now.

I had the same issue when I was using an Inkbird sealer with Foodsaver bags .
Wasn't the bags as much as it was the sealer for me .
It would lock down enough to vac the bag out , but wasn't enough pressure to get a good seal .
Looked fine when sealing , but coming out of the freezer , they had lost vacuum .

May not be the problem , but just thought I would mention that .

Double seal , I do the 2nd one towards the food .

I do the second seal towards the open bag when I used a sucker. Now with the chamber sealer I don't do a second seal but I have had some fail even with that

push the bag into the machine far enough to trigger the seal starter and pull the bag out a 1/4 inch or so and seal it again.

When I do that the machine goes into fault (so to speak)... Lights flash and doesn't start ... I try to do that all the time to cut back on roll usage ... That 1"+ waste on each side addes up

Dang i guess I've been doing it wrong. I use the low end foodsaver sucker with Out of Air bags (they are thicker). I seal then without shifting the bag, open the latch and close it again, then seal the same spot a second time. I get very few lost seals.

I very rarely double seal unless I do something stupid as sucking up a gulp of liquid, which also ruined my favorite unit.
I cut off the first seal, wipe the sealing area and start over in pulse mode.

I do it like so ......... 2 seals on what will be the bottom of the bag, fill the bag, vac, seal, seal again.

Disaster. I went through three batches in two weeks over the holidays. Daughters can’t stay away from it or my good bourbon. They know good bourbon and always look for the best. Oh well, I’m a soft touch.

I have occasionally had seal failures. Sometimes it is the factory seal is not tight.
