I have been using a propane vertical for a few years now and want to move to a pellet smoker. Looking to spend less than $500. I looked at some Pit Boss at Lowes and Walmart just to get an idea of what is available. The big problem is that I have no idea what I am looking for.

The Lowes models are different from the Walmart models but I can't tell what the pros and cons of each are.

What are the main features of a good pellet smoker?
Overall build quality would be an obvious pro but what else?

Hope others chime in because my experience with pellet is still rather short. But main things I have seen so far that I would look for are good quality controls and construction. Some controllers seem to have inherent large swing in the temp. Also in what temp increments are the controls set up for. Some are 25F, some 50F. I like the finer increments. Overall construction quality is good for long term life of your unit. How heavy is the metal (thicker holds heat better)? How good is the fit around the door? Are there gaps?

For the less than $500 range you may have to give a little on some of the better features. Might also look at Amazon for Camp Chef pellet smokers (& probably other brands).

I’ve had a RecTec for almost 2 years and have been very happy with it.

Spending less than $500 will put you in the lower end range of pellet smokers.

Warranty.
Build quality and material. Stainless etc.
Cooking area.
Hopper size. 14 pound minimum IMO.
Type of controller- Dial vs Digital.
Temp range. Can it smoke and go 400+?

In addition to Meat Mopper's list I would add a couple of things:

Manufacturer's customer service reputation
Customer product reviews
Return policy of the place of purchase
Cost of accessories and replacement parts i.e. cover, igniter, etc.
Bells and whistles - WiFi, hopper clean out, controller with a temp probe, etc.
If you plan to smoke in cold weather, do you need a smoker blanket. If so, how much does a blanket cost.

A lot of people end up buying a smoker tube, e.g. A-Maze-N tube smoker or some other brand, to boost the capabilities of the smoker. Pellet smokers have a reputation of not producing a whole lot of smoke flavor. Your mileage may be different. I'm just saying.

I have to agree with ross77 quality and longevity I used to buy a 200.00 gas grill every couple of years then bought a big green egg still using it 16years later hopefully the Yoder is the same

I should add that I really only want it for smoking at this point. I have propane grill for most grilling.
