What Kind of drum?

I usually pick them up for $10-20 by searching Craig's list or googling wanted ads in my area (Pittsburgh). $26 seems steep for a used drum to me, but any port in a storm will do if that is all you can find. Spring for the lock ring, I love mine.

I got used tomatoe drums, did a burn out not sure I had to. Bad news was had a plastic lid so I had a welder friend build a super duper top. I used the Big Poppa UDS kit because I am inept at building, we really do like it, use it more for a grill than smoker. I found my drums on eBay with free shipping.

Hi All I've been checking CL for awhile now and nothing has come of it, so far.

This drum according to the E-mail is a new drum, but a 2nd.. This is a response from a Drum Company.

What you are referring to is commonly called an "open head". A new 2nd open head is $26.00 including the cover and ring.

Hi All Just found this on Craig's List. Would this the right kind of drum for  UDS? Question really is does IT need a burn out?.

I asks in my E-mail if it was lined or not.

If it had vegetable oil in it I would guess that it was lined in order to make it a food grade barrel.

Pretty simple by looking at a picture with the lid off. If it has a liner it would be yellow, brown, red or grey. Otherwise it would just be bare metal. You do not need a food grade barrel. You can use a petroleum barrel or any other barrel as you will be burning it out and taking it down to clean metal anyway. It sounds like you might be on the right track. Make sure if you are going to use the flat lid that it has the two bung holes in it. One is 2 inch and the other is 1 inch.

Yes it has a liner. It will need to be either burnt out, or sand blasted clean, or ground out. Grinding it out would really suck. You mention that burning is not an option. Why? Your only other option is sand blasting. Any of the drums you link will work. Bite the bullet, pick one up, and start your build. Good luck!
