Lets hope it doesn't happen. I was stationed in Hawaii when the big Tsunami hit in 1970. It wasn't pretty!

Best of luck to Hawaii,

My family is in hawaii waiting for their cruise ship. We were supposed to go but had some child care issues. Everyone in the hotel is heading upwards and gathering food and water. Hopefully the preperations will be unnecessary but you can't be too careful.

Hey bear, where were you stationed? I was at Schofield working out of Wheeler mid 80's, right after the hurricane took out the road on the North shore.

My unit (9th Inf Div) retired their colors after leaving Vietnam. We had all of the ceremonies at Schofield. Two of our three Brigades were sent to Hawaii in August of 1969. The other Brigade was guys who wanted to stay in 'Nam, mostly "short" guys who wanted to get "early outs". I was not "short", so I went to Hawaii. We left the Mekong delta (Dong Tam), and I was at Schofield Barracks with the 25th Inf Div from August 19, 1969 until August, 1970. The Tsunami in 1970 hit Hawaii hard. It leveled a lot of Schofield, including our motor pool. Everybody said the only thing that was holding our motor pool together was "the termites were holding hands". I lived off post with my wife in Waipahu at the time, and had to hitch a ride home that day. I was driving home when a tree fell down in front of me. I started to back up, and a tree fell down behind me. I didn't need another hint, so I got out, left my car there, & thumbed it home!

I heard the same thing there Laurel it was a big whoops for it never really panned out. But it was a good practice run I hear.

It was interesting watching the tsunami surge past Coconut Island in Hilo bay. Check your cable news, they may show the time lapse clips. The surges there were just under three feet, but it gives you an idea of how these tsunamis can do damage. The clip show the third or 4th surge was the strongest. One of the other clips show a whole reef on Kauai that normally is underwater, high and dry as the water receded. We dodged the big one but it served to remind those who weren't around in 1960 to take these things seriously.
