Does anyone know of any good stick type meat thermometers that arent going to run me into debt? Im not sure if they have a technical name, but basically its a probe with a small gauge at the end that you just stick into meat while its cooking. Anyone got any info? Thanks yall. Doing a big cook Tuesday for some friends, gunna be fun.

These are just a couple examples of whats out there Lowes also sells some. These are not expensive and seem to do the job I have several of the remote ones like shown. I also have some accurite that work too

that's the one i use and i'm lovin it. it's nice for when i fall asleep on the recliner nad have food on the grill (haven't used it w/ the smoker yet though, but that is going to change soon).

of the thermometer? its nice with the only downfall being you need 2 AAA batteries in both the base and unit. i love the fact that i can take it with me and don't have to be hovering around (in my case when i used it the grill) towards the end when everything was coming up to temp. worked really well when i did bb ribs in feb. in the middle of a snow storm! ribs turned out great and i didn't freeze my butt off!

Thanks!....I have been looking at this kind of unit & it appears there are
a lot of differnet opinions on this type of unit. Thank you!

no problem! its nice too cause has these features:
  • Remote with 100' range
  • Programmable with built-in timer
  • 5 meat selections and 5 taste settings
  • Beeps when ready
  • Stainless steel probes
  • LED flashlight
plus the line that connects the probe to the base seems to be lined with wire mesh (for lack of better terminology) sleeve, where as some i've seen just have rubber.

I have that remote one as well actually have several of them and I found that I can use two at the same time and it will flash both temps on the same remote which is nice for meat but not if one is for smoker temp and one is for meat it keeps setting off the alarm because of smoker temp

Same problem here. What I ended up doing was turning off one of the thermos, but leave the base on. Still get both readings pluss saves on batteries on the other unit. I just set the alarm temp for 260. If it goes off I better get some doors opened up!

The 14 dollar one from walmart.... I have one and at a competition i was reading everyone's temp around us.... wrapped it in the holder with some foil... no more problems... other than that it has worked well...

If it was me knowing what i know now..... i would spend the 36-40 bucks and get the Mav. ET 73...

the switches are a pain... but it hasn't left me hangin yet.... it has 2 probes one for the smoke chamber temp and one for the meat temp....

Thanks everyone for all the help. Lots of good info.

BustedLuck... I have an ET-73 and its awesome, just didn't want to spend the money to get a new one. I don't need much, i just use a Brinkmann electric and a little baby chargriller for now so temps are relatively constant. Think i'll be making a trip to lowes today, but at 500 dollars a barrel lowes doesnt seem "low" at all.
