I have doubted my char griller guage until I calibrated it with boiling water. I recently installed a brinkman guage. As you can see from the pic, the factory gauge reads about 150 hotter. Both were immersed in boiling water for accuracy and +- 10 degrees they passed. What gives?

Pretty much. So far it hasn't affected a cook, but it's just irritating.

Yeah, they're in different places in the smoker. That explains it all to me. If you've calibrated them, it's the only answer.

I realize the temp should be different at the grate, but 100 degrees at such a small distance? Doesn't seem right to me.

It looks to me from the heat patterns on the door that you added the new therm to a cooler spot in the door.  I wonder if there is a air gap below the new therm and air is being sucked in and drawn across the probe dropping the temp there.
