My past few smokes have started with a basket full of coals with wood chunks, and then all supplemental fuel for each smoke has been nuthin' but wood.

Works out well. I doubt I'll ever do all-wood, as IMO you spend an hour building the fire and lose all that smoke. Might as well do it wich coals, which are easier to start & control the burn.
 
Don't sweat it...the Vault turns out excellent Q for a gasser, I've enjoyed mine, and my GOSM as a gasser. It was just time for a change for me...to take it a step farther.

You can always add charcoal to your smoke pan in the Vault and get some of that flavor to the meats.

You'll know when it's your time...it took me a bit to realize it, along with some advice from here on the forum.
