Stove rope questions

In the process of an old fridge build right now and have a few questions about the stove rope. Is it best to put the stove rope on the door or on the smoke box? Also which would be a better choice: graphite impregnated (gray) or non graphite (white)?

I have only done one conversion, so keep that in mind. But I adhered the rope to the door. That way you will be sure of the proper placement no matter where it touches the smoke box.

As to graphite or no, I have no idea. I could only find the white in the size I needed (1").

From what ive read its best to use a high temp silicone, this is what ill be using:

I can save ya some time and frustration. DO NOT use the cement that comes with the rope gasket kit that you get from Lowe's. I used it twice and both times it gave out. I am going to try the Rutlands next and if that fails I am making 1 out of just high temp RTV and drilling holes in the door lip for added bite. This is the kit I am talking about. Shop IMPERIAL 5/8" Fiberglass Gasket Kit at Lowes.com

One of my customers is a wood stove and fire place maker, I'm pretty sure they will have the right stuff.

Fiberglass, any stove store likely has it in stock along with the correct glue. STOVE ROPES

I am doing a fridge conversion as well.  I am going to use what they call a "tadpole gasket".  It is like a standard fiberglass gasket except it has a flange on one side of it so it is shaped like, well, a tadpole.  I then plan on attaching the gasket to the smoker with rivets or screws using a narrow metal strip with holes drilled in it along its length, sandwiching the gasket between the metal strip and the face of the smoker.  No glue required.

Do they sell it any retail stores, or do you have to order it from somewhere?

I will end up using the 8815K26.  At 2.22 a foot, I think it is not a bad deal.  I will get a really nice gasket for around 30 bucks.  I ordered a few feet of the stuff just to see what it's like and it is nice.  Very compressible, seem durable.

I emailed Rutlands about ordering a 25' roll and they informed me that the fiberglass rope they sell is not recommended for use around food.  So I am looking for other options now.  just thought I would share

I ordered some high temp silicone 3//4 inch d shape seal from mcmastercarr.com. It will seal better than the rope.
