Just snagged a dead conventional stove. Hope y'all can tell me if this idea has potential, and maybe some alternatives if it doesn't... My idea is:

Remove top and bottom elements. Don't feel like wiring my patio for 220v, so they aren't an option.

Remove stove top or cut to open vent area.

Cut opening in between floor and bottom storage drawer. (Jigsaw?)

In drawer, place bottom section with element from my existing Brinkmann Gourmet Electric Smoker(BGE). Sides of bottom will channel heat into oven chamber.

Grid over opening on oven bottom for water pan.

Questions / concerns:

1) Will the element from the BGE be adequate to heat the oven chamber, with consideration for the insulation that doesn't exist on current smoker?

2) With large enough opening between drawer and oven, will i need any kind of ducting to make sure the majority of the smoke / heat goes where it belongs?

3) Since the existing bottom / element from the BGE has lava rock, will heat to the bottom of the drawer be a concern?

4) I'm sure there's a number 4, hopefully one of you brilliant people will fill in the blank...

So far, looks like cost to me is just about zero! Very excited about this. Any and all input welcome!

Update:

Started tear down today. Hope to get enough grunge removed tomorrow to get some pics.

Removed all wiring from the rear.

Removed top burner assembly.

Removed upper and lower elements.

Test fit of Lower pan and element from BGE in lower drawer is excellent, less than 2 fingers space between top of pan and bottom of oven.

Oven chamber needs serious elbow grease.

Questions: To cut single large opening in floor to lower drawer, and use grid to support water tray? Or, cut several smaller openings for smoke to enter, and allow water pan to sit on floor without additional support? Which would minimize drippage into lower compartment?

Saturday update:

Got most of the major crud out, still needs a good scour... maybe not, since the smoke is going to do a number in there anyways....

Tried placing the BGE base pan / element inside the oven chamber and turned it on, just to see how the temp would run, since it's rated for approx 250 F in it's standard unit. Dropped the digital probe i through the back to monitor, after 60 min the temp was over 400! So, either I'm going to hope the underneath plan will provide some good heat dissipation, I'll need to find a way to control temp on this element, or I'm going to need to find an alternate heat source. Suggestions anyone?

Edit: Lots of threads would indicate that I might be better off scrapping the electric and considering propane. Thoughts?
