the boy has came across an stainless steel commercial refrig for free except the gas to go and get it. he wants to turn it into a smoker, I haven't seen it yet but thought I would see if anyone as any experience at this or any ideas?

the thinking is that we will use a burner from a turkey fryer for heat, I will build an external smoke box so we can cold smoke also. we are already looking for some oven racks to cut up so we have more.

I have read so many different opinions on where to place the vent, I am thinking I will have 2, one high to use during hot smoking, one low to use during cold smoking

I am a little concerned about the louvers cut into the inside of this and the insulation.

Looks like you have a good platform to start with that's for sure. How do plan to control the heat?

looks nice! There are several builds on here where people convert commercial warmers to smokers. I would say the concept would be the same for a refrigerator. Check out the calculators on here too if you haven't already. It will help you dial in the exact size of dampers and exhaust plus firebox size to make it work as efficiently as possible.

thanks for the tip, wasn't sure how to get started to, I will see if I can find that info, sometimes it so pretty hard to find the right threads.

I have a homemade smokehouse that I built a pitmaster IQ 110 into and it works like a charm. It controls inlet air automatically and allows you keep the door closed as you use less fuel. Gets you up to temp real quick and keeps you within a few degrees of set point. Something to consider. It's in a thread called another homemade smoker (with a twist).
