Smoking with wood heating pellets

The other thing to consider is what part of the trees are used - I understand heating pellet use all of the tree - heartwood and bark.  Some say that bark does not provide a good flavor smoke

If that's Green Supreme, it's listed as a home heating fuel, with 90% Hardwood & 10% Softwood:

This year, even my heating pellets are costing me $750 for 6,000 pounds.

So I wouldn't expect any pellets that are good for smoking food would currently be less than $5 per 40 LB bag.

They are heating pellets not recommended for cooking.Here is a good deal and food safe.

How to make your own pellets/discs for Bradley smokers

Cut 12 mm. thick slices of desired wood, 90 deg angel to the fibers. If cut along the fibers the discs tend to get a convex shape when burnt on the heating slab. After drying them at 140 deg C for some hours in the smoker, make discs by using the type of saw/drill, similar to those used for making holes in walls for electric switches. As I didn't have  a drill of the correct dia. they turned out slightly smaller than the original discs. This can make the discs hang on the chute and not fall down properly on the heating slab. This is solved by grinding off a few millimeters from the end of the chute.  If the discs are not very very dry, it will take quite some time before they will produce smoke. Therefore, it is a good idea to dry all kinds of discs for an hour in 140 C before smoking.
