Well, as some of you might now, I'm actived duty Air Force. Today, I just found out that I got orders to Italy!!! I put in for the assignment not really expecting to get it. I got off work at 0630 this morning and got home around 0700. I fell asleep 1.5 hrs later and the phone rang at 1100. I was so tired that it didn't really dawn on me it was the phone ringing, so the machine got it. My wife came upstairs and said that your boss called and he wants to you to call him back. My first thought was, great, what did I do now? I'm a pretty decent troop, but it's never good when you're getting phone calls at home. As I make my call, I started falling back asleep. My boss got on the line and asked where I was trying to get orders to, and I said to Alaska (my #1 choice) and he said, well you might be upset then because you're going to Italy. My eyes opened right up and I sat up and bed and said holy sh**, I'm going to Italy! The wife and kids are pretty happy and as I started to calm down, I said, crap, I just bought the big block, wonder if I can take it w/ us! Maybe have a little smoked italian food? I leave in August, so I'll try and keep in touch the best I can once I get over there. Sorry for the long rant, I'm just so freakin excited!

Glad to hear you are going someplace you wanted

I'm thankful for your service to our country, as well as being able to go anywhere you need to help protect us. Italy sounds like the trip of a lifetime and I'm anxious to see how your smoking skills are influenced by the products you'll have access to, over there.

Good luck, and congrats!

Are you going to Aviano or Ghedi? If its Aviano, drop me a line., It's been a long time since I was there but I spent 5 years there. Can tell you a little about it.

Congrats!

As far as shipping a smoker and such over, contact TMO ASAP. It will need to be spotless clean if they allow it. Lawn Mowers and that such as well.

Man I am so envious. I have always dreamed of going to Italy just to EAT! I don't know about smoking there, or if it is even possible. But HEY the best food in the world is there, or much of it. Even if you don't smoke meat you will have a culinary extravaganza there! Or you you should anyway. We wait for details.
And from a Chief Petty Officer with 30 years service active & reserve, thanks for your service.

I'm headed to Ghedi for a 2 year tour. I'm thinking it will probably be the same way as my grill and mower when I PCS'd up here. It had to be spotless, but being it's going overseas this time, I'll have to check on it.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it! I couldn't imagine doing anything else for a living at this point in time. I'm looking forward to going and if I can't be smokin over there, I'll be sure to post some qview's of the beautiful country and the REAL italian food!

Thank you so much for your service. For you to get Italy is a really great thing for you and the family too. You deserve it. Thanks again and keep us posted

I'll be in the northcentral part of the country. It is in the Provice of Brescia and is 12 miles south of the Alps. Bergamo is 40 miles away from where I'm going to be. Man, I keep getting more and more excited everytime I find something new!

Hey 'grillin' sounds like a great adventure about to start in August. Hope it works for you because we really appreciate you working for us.

Hope navyjeremy get's in touch.

Be safe..........

Hey grillin' here's an idea...UDS...55 gallon drums are all over the world and so is locally made lump charcoal, buy the parts you need in the States (grills, bolts, ball valves, pipe fittings, expanded metal) and build it over there.

Another thing you might want to check on is what type of regulators Italy uses for their LPG, the ones here are French and completely different from American regulators, if you do take your American propane bottle make sure it is fairly new because they won't fill it after the expiration date stamped on it, also the European propane bottles only hold 2.5 gallons and have a different fill valve than American bottles, so..., check out Mr Heater online, they might have a connector that will work. If you can't have your propane bottle filled there then you might want to take a 1/4 " double hose barb with you and convert to their bottles.

Have fun BBQ'in and exploring Italy,

Gene

Nothing like somewhere you're interested in. Good luck on the GOSM.

I am stationed down in Naples and when I transferred over here had no problems bringing my GOSM. The only problem that I have is finding good wood here. I don't really like hickory and that is pretty much all they sell here at the Exchange. I have been lucky and found a guy on Ebay that ships over here so that worked out well. If you have any other questions about Italy send me a PM and I will try to help out.

Thanks for the info Jeremy. Who do you get your wood off of ebay from? I bought 10# of both cherry and apple from vamtnwoodman. He was pretty easy to deal w/ and shipped fast. Lookin forward to going, so I'll shoot you a PM w/ any questions.
