I have someone asking what they could get that could serve as both a smoker and a grill. I personally would get 2 different items. (1 of each) but I am trying to figure something out to help her. No problem using charcoal btw.

She was thinking about a big green egg but doesn't care for the money you pay for such a small cooking area. Does a bge work as a grill?

It can I believe.....but at what price? The 22.5 inch kettle can do very well. I've even added a steam rack so I can add more meat when needed...works great.

I have smoked a couple of times on my Weber, and it works pretty well. Just have to watch it close. It grills great. I would recommend it.

The Char-Griller would probably be a good option also. I saw the model with the smoke box for around $160. It has more room than the Weber, and it is probably easier to control the heat when smoking. Actually, I am thinking of one for myself...

How big is their budget?
Will they be grilling most often and smoking just every once in a while? (or vice versa)

Several water-pan smokers (including ECB & Weber Bullet SMG) can double as grill and smoker if you remove the water-pan.

Offset smokers often have grill grates that allow you to grill inside the coal box (or you could simply put some coals in the meat chamber under the meat).

I grilled the occasional steak on my ECB many times with great success. I wouldn't want to grill a dozen hamburgers on that thing, but in a pinch it works fine (I do most of my grilling on my propane grill and use my BWS for smoking).

Somebody has to say it, so I'll volunteer. The ECB. It is after all a brinkman smoke and grill..... Just move the ash pan the the higher grate where the water pan sits when smoking and you have the top rack for grilling.

Worked great for me the 1 time I tried it.

It's true that the ECB "can" serve both purposes but if she is any friend to you at all, don't suggest that she spend money on it. If she is ever going to smoke anything... she needs something else. It was my first smoker and I hated it! After some mods I got to where I could smoke with it but mostly it's a pain in the arse. I used it for grilling way more that I used it for smoking. I agree with who ever posted below that said getting a smoker and a grill is a good way to go. All IMHO of course.

This is the course I suggested but figured I would ask around. Looks like she is leaning towards one of the weber kettles. If she enjoys smoking she may move on to a larger one later.

I perfer two, use the gas grill for grilling. I have used the firebox on my smoker but only when I,m smokin. It does work great though, have cooked burgers and steaks
