I thought it would be cool to get a discussion going on the fabrication of smokers and grills. I was thinking everything from the Gal drum with a grate on it to the multi thousand dollar "pit" that you need a semi to haul.

I am a shade tree metal worker and wanna be mechanical engineer (I know just enough to really hurt myself) and I am starting a project.

I took possession of a 325 gal. propane tank that will soon be a new "pit".

I have a budget of about three hundred Dillar but want to do it in a lot less. I am making a trailer as well. I have already pulled out the rear axel of our old 88' Plymouth voyager mini van to use for the trailer.

I will be putting some pics up as the project begins - next week.

I would like to hear your stories of your projects... please share.

I have no story for you but I will be watching to see how your project progresses. I have made a few fridge smokers and would like to make a smoker someday like you are going to be working on. May I ask where/how you obtained the propane tank and also on a 325 lb. tank what the length and circumference is?

good luck on the smoker-that mini van was a lemon-hope the rearend holds up.

I made the smoker in my sig pic, and am in the process of making another just like it- with a diiferent firebox. I also made a vertical out of two 55-gallon drums for a guy at work.

Man...if you can pull that off for under $300... I'd be REALLY impressed! You must have alot of stock/metal scrap available free. Don't forget about shelving, perhaps storage bins, propane storage if needed.

Sounds like a fun time tho, I am a build nut as well...:{)

I need to figure out how to post pics in the thread. But in the mean time, check out the attached photos of the new construction. Well underway...

Any suggestions would be well appreciated!!!

I am pretty confident that I can pull this off for less then $300 bucks - O - by - the - way, including the trailer!!

I do have access to a lot of free metal and a couple of buddies with a bad habbit.... They LOVE good Q and they are all experienced welders with their own equipment! - works out well for all of us!

So far, total cost about $40 - Saws-ALL blades and a piece of steal that will become the baffle plate and other misc. pieces.

Thanks!
John

ps Any suggestions on how to actually post photos in the text body would be great!
