Maui, Hi.
Aloha All,

I'm not much of a fabricator so here goes. I'd like to set up a quick disconnect hookup for my Smoke Daddy so I can use it with a smoker, weber kettle grill, and cold smoker I am trying to make out of an Igloo cooler. I would appreciate any suggestions from the engineers out there. Pictures would help too. My thanks to you in advance.

Hey Old Poi Dog,

There were a few posts that I remembered that showed some hardware mods to allow interchangeability between a couple of different rigs. Here are a few links, hope they help out. The posts by PignIt show the smoke daddy on a couple of different rigs, just like you propose. There is one of these (or a facsimile there of) in my near future. Good Luck!

After veiwing the links above, I thought I would also do an extension pipe to bring the smoke into the cener of my smoker. The pipe that is supplied with the Smoke Daddy is black pipe. Does the extension pipe and related fittings need to be black pipe material? I don't want my friends and family ingesting any harmful gases/vapors from pipe/tubing materials. The hardware store that I visited only had brass fittings and brass 3/8 inch tubing.

Hey Poi Dog,

Black will work if you can find it, and would probably be your cheapest option. Brass would be OK, just don't get the Galvanized iron pipe.

BBQ Engineer,

Thanks for the needed info. I'll beging the search for black pipe this afternoon. Do you think a plumbing supply house would carry it? Suggestions where to look would be appreciated. Take Care.

Hey Poi,

Maybe I should load some up in my suitcase and bring it to you personally! I have always wanted to visit Hawaii.

You should be able to find (black) iron pipe at any hardware store that is worth it's salt. A lot of times it isn't actually called Black Iron Pipe, but rather Iron Pipe. Iron pipe will come in a couple of different varieties, (black and galvanized) and you can tell the difference because the galvanized has a silver colored plating on it to provide corrosion resistance. If you visit your hardware store, just tell them that you are looking for some iron pipe, or a pipe nipple, and they should get you to the right place. Iron pipe is a standard hardware item. Hope that helps...Aloha!

Iaorana OPD,

You might try talking to a plumber, he should have some leftover pieces and he could cut and thread them to the specific lengths you need.

I like the stainless that someone here used, I can't find it locally so I will probably order it online. I use a "black iron" union that you can pick up at Ace, Lowes, etc. I primarily did it to make it easier to remove and clean.

Extending the pipe to the center of the smoker is another mod that I reccomend as well. Just make sure you buy a bottle brush to keep it clean. I will probably rig up a stainless gun cleaning brush to keep the build up down.

Somehow missed this thread. Any hardware or plumbing supply will have the black iron pipe. It comes in a variety of lengths so you should be able to get what you need to do what you are doing without having anything cut and threaded. One thing I did have to do is rough up the smoker side of my washers so they would bite into the metal enough to keep the pipe from turning. You can only tighten your pipe up so much without squeezing the wall of your smoker if you have one with insulation in it. This is a very simple and inexpensive mod and well worth the time and effort. Let us know how it turns out.

Nickelmore,

Thanks for the tip. Where online can I order stainless steel 3/8 inch pipe?

PignIt, Thanks for the extra tip about roughing up the washers.
