I had a package of regular hot dog buns in the freezer leftover from contributing to a family reunion hot dog day. We dont normally eat hot dogs and when we eat sausages on buns we usually buy buns a step up from the regular. These needed used up and it hit me, I haven't made sloppy Joe's in forever. I stopped putting sloppy Joe on regular hamburger type buns because it always squished out. So I would toast the buns, then pull them apart, put the sloppy Joe over the pieces and eat with a fork! I thought, "hey, this could be a thing with the hot dog buns" and it actually worked better than hamburger buns.
So I made a batch of my sloppy Joe sauce, chopped some onions, jalapenos and garlic and went at it
And here's where it got weird, yep that's cilantro. It was actually very good, but cilantro gags some people.
All cooked down
I opened the buns up and put them in the toaster oven on turbo or convection at about 300deg for a while to warm them and firm them up to receive the Sloppy Joe and stand up to it. Shredded cheese on first.
The hot Sloppy Joe melted the cheese. The next go round we also put hot sauce over top. Plated here with crunchy breaded dill pickle slices and my copycat Chic fil A sauce which is an outstanding dipper for many things. A cucumber onion tomato salad on the side to brighten things up a bit.
The hot dog buns contained the Sloppy Joe pretty well especially using the fork for the salad to kind of push the stuff back in to place after taking a bite. It does kind of still "wander" away from the bite but it was a great way to use up those hot dog buns!
