Ate at one once in Grand Rapids MN. Yeah I don't get the love affair.
I read somewhere the secret ingredient is Dr Pepper soda. Don't know if that is the chicken or the egg debate.

Neither do I!

I guess, like a lot of regional dishes, you just have to be "raised to it" (as my FIL would say).

I'm guessing so. Kinda like I like fresh baked bread or buns, but if you're from the south it's usually cornbread. And I've never had collard greens... so no input... don't think they would be for me either.

No, they're not for everyone, that's for sure!

I L-O-V-E greens/cornbread (pretty much any greens EXCEPT kale), but the cornbread must NOT be "sweet" cornbread...ever! Big FAT bonus if it's cracklin' cornbread!

Yep, food preferences can be VERY regional! :emoji_wink:

Same applies here in north GA for cornbread. NO sugar.
I've had those sandwiches several times visiting Iowa and really liked them. Nothing there beat the pork tenderloin sandwiches though.
Thanks for the recipe Brokenhandle Brokenhandle . Gonna give that a try this weekend. I want to try chopsaw chopsaw 's as well. The vinegar sounds interesting.

Here in Iowa we call them taverns.
I know them as " Taverns " also .

If you get around to trying the one I posted , watch the salt . That one is listed with that salt because of the cooking method . Which is covered with water after browning , and cooked down until most of the liquid evaporates . That breaks the meat down finer . You don't have to do that part , taste will be the same .

She based her set off Canteen Lunch. When she was married to Tom Arnold from Ottumwa.
Eldon Iowa is only 20 or so miles from Ottumwa Iowa. I’ve driven through Eldon several times and I can’t determine where it was at for sure but that was many years ago when they had that loose meat sandwich shop.

Yep. I made a note of that when I wrote it down. Probably start with about a half teaspoon and see what I think. Thanks
