I have a cheap SFB and it leaks a good bit from the chamber and the SFB, making heat control way more hands on than I would like and it is killing me in charcoal. I have read some mods and I want to seal the chamber more and the SFB using either silicone or some sort of felt and I was wondering which works better? I am not handy at all, so I am leaning towards the felt which seems all I have to do is stick it on. I am not sure how to apply the silicone (I have read about Pam, parchment paper, etc.).

Also, if anyone has extended their chimney, what can I use to stick the dryer vent to the inside of the chamber or do you find that aluminum roof flashing works best?

MrLederman, morning... below is a search for Rutland high temp stuff....  This may give you some other ideas that are available at your local hardware store also...  Dave

For the smoker compartment I used this caulking around the edges of box and lid then on top of caulk bead placed wax paper and closed to create a perfect closure with no leaks.  The wax paper applied to the caulk prevents the two beads from sticking together.  Once you form the seal remove the wax paper. ;

I used this for the firebox with the same method;

The caulk is red and looks pretty cool with a black smoker.  Also shows where potential pockets formed as I've had to go back and redo once in the 2 years I did this.

Pretty easy and only requires a caulk gun and a steady hand when applying the caulk bead.

Good luck
