For the first burn on my new smoker I plan on it just burning all the fumes and nasties off of it. The second they recommend coating the inside with cooking oil, which I will do. My question is I am thinkin of coating the outside of the box with oil too, will this help it prevent rusting? I don't have a place to store it other than outside with a cover over it. Even with a cover you know it will get some moisture so I'm just trying to take more steps to keep my unit in good condition as log as possible.

I would not put oil on the outside, will only attract dirt and lots of it.  Keep it covered, and deal with rust as it appears.
