First off welcome to SMF please make a thread in roll call and tell us about you and your smoker. Often times people refer to Black Jack Oak as scrub oak is that what you are talking about? If so then Back Jack is actually part of the red oak family and is a very good smoking wood. I believe most oaks are good for smoking

In the section "woods for smoking" it says OAK - Heavy smoke flavor--the Queen of smoking wood. RED OAK is good on ribs, WHITE OAK makes the best coals for longer burning. All oak varieties reported as suitable for smoking. Good with red meat, pork, fish and heavy game."
