Until this weekend I had never really thought about this happening, but it happened and thank God that no one was hurt. We had the smoker going and another chimney of lump that was almost ready to go into the smoker, when my kids accidentally pointed out a MAJOR safety issue.  My kids are all well old enough to understand that you do not play around fire, and I dont let them goof off or screw around anywhere in the vicinity of the smoker, grill, burner etc. However, my oldest (14) was going after a grossly over thrown football ( my 10 yr old can really air one out ) and he stumbled over the block and chimney of glowing lump, sending the chimney flying and hot coals scattering all over the place. He suffered some synged leg hair but no burns. His knee hit the chimney itself, so I consider him and myself very fortunate.  This has brought me to the conclusion that given the rambunctious nature of kids, I am considering buying a dog kennel and putting around my smoking and cooking area so that they dont run into the fire, just some chain link. any ideas or suggestions.

NI-sounds like your 14 yr old avoided some serious injury. Whenever I use my chimney I place it on one of my dutch oven cooking tables or on my sideburner of my propane grill. My kids have learned long ago to never throw anything in the directions of my smokers or grill or they'll just go to the front yard to toss the ball around.

yea, I agree with the above said. they got lucky, but I don't think you need to go drop all kind of $$$ and clutter up your yard when really you just need to have a talk with them. If they old enough to know better than to mess with it, then they old enough to not throw a ball or play around by it. Just need to be more careful. they old enough to know whats safe and not safe.

OH BELIEVE YOU ME they both got alittle more than a talkin to after I realized no one but the yard was hurt. They both KNOW not to throw towards my cooking area, but they are boys and sometimes the brain doesnt kick in as fast as the body does.  They were far enough away that it shouldnt have been an issue, but after much smack talking from his brothers, the 10 yr old launched a bomb. He threw it a good 25 yds, and to his brothers credit, he caught the ball

I wouldn't go to any expense I'm sure they learned a lesson and chances are it would happen again.

I think I'd try a lesser expensive option like some fence posts and a few horizontal slats to make a corral.

Didnt think of that, I happen to have about 20 cedar posts that would work nicely for this, just have to split em, which is a good job for the boys  lol

25 yard pass????

How 'bout 60 ft of chain on your receiver?

I still think that's all TO needed.
