As I shop for a pellet grill the Rec Tec Stampede has made it to the short list. Something that I don't see discussed is the use of holes in the back for exhaust instead of a stove pipe on the side. I know I can get covers to keep rain out. What I don't know is how those holes affect the cook.

Does anyone know if they help or hinder vs the side stack?

I have a Stampede and she cooks like a champ! Not sure why they didn’t use a chimney BUT if you get one buy a cover and keep it on at all times when you aren’t cooking.
If you don’t you will invent new cuss words when fixing the swelled pellets in the auger:mad:;)

Thank you. I do intend to keep it covered, and this design allows the use of a generic cover. Unfortunately you can't put the cover on when it is still hot so if it starts to rain before it cools there is a risk of water getting in. Do the vent covers work well enough to keep the pellets from swelling in that scenario?

My neighbor has the Stampede with the stainless vents. They do keep the water out. He also used high temp caulk to seal around them.

Thank you. With that design do you know if there is a temperature variance from front to back? Any need to rotate the meat as it cooks?

Not that I’m aware of. I can tell you I’ve sampled his brisket and pork shoulder. Both were very good and he’s a novice.
