I’m just finished up a project on a stick fed offset smoker. I thought I would share the results of using Flax oil for seasoning. We went to Flax for all of our cast iron and have been very happy with the finish. I did some searching on this site and did see one reference to using Flax on a smoker, so I gave it a shot. The process was to remove as much of the oxidation as I could, wipe it all down, apply a liberal coat of Flax oil and then get it HOT. It took a while to get it to temperature, but it was clear when it was hot enough. It turned a nice black and took on a dry appearance. I’m happy with the results. Here are a few pictures:
Before starting...
All stripped down ...
And after the first cycle of heat to set the flax...
I am looking forward to seeing how it looks after a season of smoking.
