Hello... i am new to the forum and new to smoking foods but becoming very interested in this hobby....

i have researched BOTH electric and propane  smokers A LOT .. I am leaning toward propane. The best of both worlds would be the new propane / thermostat controlled vertical smoker that i can not find anywhere.

QUESTIONS:

1. i am leaning toward electric because my wife likes a little "bark" on her meats and i heard electric just doesn't produce bark....?

2. I AM LOOKING AT THE MASTERBUILT PRO - the price is right and i have seen positive reviews- any advice?

3. Lastly, I know i will probably need an 8"" or 10" (will 10" fit)  iron skillet for the wood chunks., a good remote therm, and a bigger (how big) water pan - recommendations of which kinds and where to best find them?

thanks- Bob

I use a Bradley Electrec and I just love it. Set it up, put in you meat and leave it alone. It works great.

I contacted Masterbuilt regarding their new thermostatically controlled propane smokers and all I get is they should be available sometime Winter 2012/Spring 2013

Here's a thread started about them http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/128112/update-from-masterbuilt-regarding-the-new-propane-smokers

Smokingribs: a friend of mine loves his Bradley.... but it doesn't crisp up chicken at all.... does yours - maybe he is not doing something right?

I've got a electric Cookshack, and I've not had any problems producing bark.  I've even managed smoke rings by adding a piece of lump charcoal in the wood tray just based on suggestions here.  I can also get fairly crispy chicken by putting the heat up to 280 or so.  Mine will go up to 300 if I need. If you get one that goes less, you can put in in a hot oven for about 15 minutes. Actually, I recently did the smoked chicken wing recipe from the newsletter and man were they good.

Welcome to the forum, and have fun.

sorry about the repeats - computer issues... so electric WILL produce bark?

i thought that if i did get an electric - i would could always finish my chicken  off in my Charbroil Big Easy for 10 - 15 minutes... anyone ever try this?
