Doing research and came across a build where they guy made his RF plate removable so he could place a grate down and turn it into a charcoal BBQ. Has anyone else done this? Would just using charcoal in FB instead of sticks be same thing? Just trying to get plans layed out before starting my build. Thanks

If you want and easy way just run a standard RF plate, then when you want a charcoal grill  lay 1" thick firebricks on the plate so it does not absorb all the heat from the coals.

Thanks firebricks is a good idea. Would you get enough air flow under them sitting on the bricks?

Nope, you burn the wood or charcoal in the firebox and use a shovel to move the coals to the smoker.

Argentine parrilla style.

Or do what I did. Make the fire box large enough to grill. Cut a door on top, build a removable cooking surface. Remove the cooking surface and leave lid closed when smoking. Put cooking surface on and less fire when grilling on the firebox.

No ashes in smoking chamber. No need to clean RF plate after throwing coals on it. Keep the fire in the firebox.
