While getting ready for my first throw down with the smoker i found this neat little remote thermometer at, of all places, Wal-Mart. It was on clearance and at a price of only 9.96 I picked up a couple. It turned out to be a RF remote with a cradle base but both are on the same frequency. It turned out to be a plus though as I took one handset in the house and left 1 on the smoker. You can alternate which probe you are reading by turning on the cradle/base of each probe seperately. I would leave on the probe with the highest temp and could keep an eye on it when inside refilling my drink or making sides. Not as professional as some of you guys but they seemed to do the job intended.

I got two of the same unit from Wal Mart. I get seperate readings on both. I use one for grate temp, one for meat. I guess they have a limited number of freqs they use. Maybe just bad luck to get the same. I'd call WalMart and ask for an exchange.

Those were the last 2 they had on the rack. I went to another wal-mart and they did have some more but they weren't on clearance. Still they were only about 13 bucks. I'll probably end up with a couple more.

As long as I have the smoker going I might as well throw on 3 or 4 pieces of meat.

I have two of the same thermometers......you can leave both bases on and use one remote....it will flash back and forth between the two probes. If I'm doing two butts, I'll monitor the one that is reading higher and only switch on the other base just to check where it's at. Not a bad thermometer for the money....

I bought one, and I'm having trouble keeping it connected, There's enough power for the display and the green light on the base, but not enough to transmit to the remote, even when it's right next to it... I change the batteries and it works for a 1/2 and stops connecting. I'm going to try a better brand of batteries before I throw it through the front window of my Walmart.

I don't really have any complaints about mine, but I will admit they are not built very heavy. I question if it would actually go through the window, or if it would just break the unit and bounce off?

When I hooked up the first one the base would not come on at all. I found that the batteries were not fully seated in the compartment. Once I got them in right and lined up properly there has been no problems. One good thing about Wal-mart is they have a pretty easy going return department. If it continues to screw up just take it back and exchange it.

I have 2 of them also. I really like them. Like was said before, make sure your batteries are seated tight. They have a tendency of popping up.

I got the same one from Target.............I liked it so much I got one for my dad to use on his new 40" MES.............Great thermo...............

I bought the same unit Saturday for the butt smoke I did on Sunday. The food temp side of my Maverick ET-73 quit working a couple of smokes ago-the smoker side is still going strong. Unit worked great though it was a bit of a pain to pack two remotes around.

My wife got me one of these for my b-day last month, along with some other stuff. I haven't used it yet though. How accurate are all of your thermos?

That's the one I use, works great.
And if you have two bases on and one remote it switches back and forth between the temps of the two bases.
It is up to you to figure out which temp is which though. :)

I first thought I wanted the Maverick ET-73 dual probe remote. Some here seem to like them. Upon further research, I found a lot of people had trouble with them. Main knocks were:

1. Range. Many have stated they will not work through even one wall in their house.

2. No out of range warning. Lose contact with base, and the last temps recorded will continue to display with no warning that contact was lost with the base unit.

Has anyone experienced any of these problems with the cheaper Wallyworld single probe model?

As the battery charge goes down so does the range.
But With new batteries I can go pretty much anywhere in my house with no loss of signal with the cheap Wally world remotes.
They're pretty hardy too. There have been more than a few early mornings that I've dropped the receiver (concrete, or tile in the kitchen) and it still works fine.
