Hi all,

I recently bought a remote thermometer from Costco, and have some mixed thoughts (Sorry, don't recall the brand). It seems to work great when fully, or nearly fully, inserted into meat; but when smoking some smaller fare, with the needle only 1-2 inches into the meat, it reads the temperature far higher than it really is. I assume this is from too much of the needle being outside the meat, and conducting heat from the environment down to the sensor. Are there any ways to fix this?

Thanks,

Pete

PS I am thinking about things like chicken, ribs, and other stuff that doesn't have enough meat to get the needle inserted all the way...

I have read other posts where people with crimped/damaged wires wrapped them in foil with good results............maybe worth a shot.

Maybe contact the manufacturer and ask if that is normal operation, if it is not, you might get a replacement probe out of the deal.

Good luck. It sucks when new toys don't work the way you wanted them too.

That shouldn't be a problem as the sensor taking the temp is in the very end of the probe (in most model's) Maybe your high reading is actual, and forget about probing ribs, darn near impossible, do the bend test...
P/U your ribs with tong's, if they bend down 90 degrees and the meat seperates from the bone, they're done!!

I'll second the bend test. I am not sure I have ever tried to take the temp of ribs.

Have you tried putting the probe through a small piece of spud, and compare temps with your built-in therm/or oven? Have you checked the probe in boiling water/or ice water for accuracy?

Rich that is a good idea, I haven't tried that yet. But, it does seem to be accurate when the needle is fully inserted into the meat...

Thanks,

Pete
