I am gonna drop a big black walnut tree that is growing in the back yard and I will have the logs cut into lumber. BUTT ! I will have a whole
grunch of walnut big limbs left over. The question is,will walnut [seasoned
of course] be a good wood to smoke with ? If so I will split it and stack
it and lay on it for 18 months or so before I use it.. Thanx, Hemi..

I personally would not recommend it. Walnut has lots of natural oils. Up north when I burned a wood stove it would pop alot even after seasoning 10 months! I gave off little heat realative to other woods. I did not care for the aroma either which is often a good indicator among many.

I do right much woodworking but by profession I am a machinist/welder.
This tree HAS to come down and I will stack and stick the lumber along
with what I already have drying out for projects when I retire.[shortly]
But I know from the last two I dropped that I will have some limbs
that I can find use for and some projects that I will be able to use some small stuff on . But I am talking about a BIG tree. I just hate to waste anything. I might try a bit of it but I guess I will put it on freecycle and
give it away for firewood. Thanx for the advise.. Hemi..

Just thought of something... Got some small stuff I have had in the dry for 3-4 years that I could sure do without. This weekend I will try a bit of it and see what it does. just build a fire and see what it smells and burns like.. simple enough I recon.. Thanx again for the info..

I a cabinetmaker and cut walnut alot on the table saw-stuff stinks-I don't and won't use for smoking or grilling-as rick says lotsa oils in the stuff.sur is pretty in woodworking though.
