Ok I just got a new smoker and was going to do a brisket for Memorial day, but my local butcher had $7.99/lb for brisket?????  Is this now the going rate, or is my butcher crazy to be asking that much?  It is looking like a pork shoulder is going to win out this year.

Sounds like a trimmed flat, maybe? If you can find cryovac "packer"s, they are usually less than half that. Normally 11-16 lbs each, and untrimmed. They contain both the point end and the flat.

I went back today to check on the cut, and it was a trimmed flat, but I asked about the whole brisket and they went to check.  He came back and tried to charge me $9.39 a pound!  It was the same price as the trimmed.  I asked why it was the same price and he said he could give me a small discount, but not a lot off.  I told him if I was going to pay $10 a pound it better be prime rib. Lol.  What is everyone else paying around the country for brisket???

Wow, where do you live?
I bought a brisket recently at Restaurant Depot for $3.69 lb. It was more than I usually pay, but this was Angus. A year ago I could buy a regular choice brisket for $2.15 lb. Now they're over $3.

Hmmm, small town southern Colorado with a Walmart - I was cranky when I messed up a point brisket that I paid around $15 for a 4-5 pounder ... if I'd paid $35-40 I'd have eaten my shoe and given up cooking.
