Post smoked wood\ash

Hi,

I have been using my smoker for the first time today and have used a few self made foil sachets to put on the coals, can't wait until the stainless boxes are back in stock.

After they had fulfilled their life for the purpose the contents look like charcoal, admittedly very small bits :) Is there any useful future purpose for them? What do you do with them?

Also, is there any useful purpose for the ash generated by the charcoal? i'm using cocunut husk blocks which burn hotter and longer than normal charcoal but wondering if it's of any use for anything once it's ash.

use the 'charcoal' for starting future fires, add the ash to your compost heap/garden soil. (poured between the rows, it's supposed to be useful for controlling slugs)

I powder charcoal with an equal part lard and pack it half full into a small waxed paper cup (the actual waxed dixie cups) and stuff the rest of the way with wadded tp or newspaper. I use those for convenient and easy fire lighters. one match, every time.

Love these coconut blocks, they burn to pure ash :) no lumpy left over bits or maybe it's down to the smoker.

Jon, where do you get your coconut blocks? Are they available on the Mainland or do you have these shipped in from the Islands?

I get them from a mail order BBQ spe******t in the UK, not sure if i'm allowed to post the link here so i'll PM it to you. If OK to post the link let me know and i'll add it.

They certainly do seem to burn much hotter and for longer than normal charcoal but that may be my perception as i haven't tried normal charcoal on the CGSP.
