I don't think the stack does anything of value versus the vent holes in the chassis. It's not a stick burner or a vertical charcoal smoker. Draft isn't an issue when there's a fan to generate positive pressure. Older pellet grills did have smoke stacks. Common complaints were uneven temperatures. If anything it is better for airflow to be somewhat restricted.

Reactions: Smoky Da Bear
This is an interesting discussion. I have had my Pit Boss 700 FB for just over a year. It has been a true beast. Primarily the problem is temperature fluctuations, which can vary as much a 60 degrees from the set temp. I have called Pit Boss customer service. While the reps are friendly, all they have ever done is make me start at step 1 with how to start up the smoker. After 3 calls with no real help, I just gave up. Ultimately, I purchased a replacement PID controller on Amazon from Meatender. I also installed a stack and put caps on the small vents in the back of the smoker. This puppy hums right now. It consistently maintains a temperature within +- 5 degrees of the set temp. I note that the set temp on the controller and the thermometer in the lid of the smoker are always within a few degrees of each other. But, when I put a ThermoPro probe in its holder on the grill plates, it generally reads 20 degrees cooler consistently. I have even put two different probes from two different thermometers in at the same time, and they consistently agree with one another. So, all that means to me is the the true temperature at the level of the grill is about 20 degrees cooler than the controller and lid mounted thermometer read. So, I just adjust accordingly, and get good results.
