Owls

I've always been fascinated by owls.

Last night I couldn't sleep so I went out and sat on my steps and there were two eastern screech owls in two different oaks on the property and another further away. That's a first for me to hear 3 owls within listening distance.Could've been a pair and a fledgeling,even though they're way past nesting season I do remember at an Audubon show the presenter saying they will continue to feed their young for quite some time.

Anyways it was a very cool experience.

I enjoy listening to them when we go camping as well!

I love owls. In fact I remember my favorite childhood toy was an owl made from a big thing of knitting yarn. A few years back while metal detecting, I took a break for a moment and looked upward to see the biggest barred owl of my life. Not impressed with my presence, it took off without a sound. Quite the wing span.

As a kid I went x-country skiing with my family at a fairly remote lodge in AK. It was super cold (-20f) that week and very clear. My dad and I went for a midnight ski under the full moon one of the nights and heard an owl. We stopped to listen and he told me to hoot back. That's when the woods around us came alive with owls. There must have to 10 different owls all around who were trying to figure out what the heck I was.

To this day, I will hoot back at owls when I hear then and can normally get a response. Try it next time you hear them, it's pretty cool

I just heard a couple last night while grilling. The coolest I ever saw was while grouse hunting with my Dad snd older Brother and a great horned owl flew over us (Northern MN).

Our local Audubon had their raptor weekend two weeks ago.Saturday is hawks/eagles and Sunday is owls.We were out of town that weekend which sucks because I got the wife her first REAL camera earlier this year and that would've been a great place for some serious photography!

We have some owls in our forest from time to time. It's pretty cool when the daytime songbirds go quiet and the owls start up.

Ever hear a screech owl? We've had them here a few time and it will make your spine shiver and the hair stand up on your neck.

I've thought about getting one of those mechanical decoy owls to ward of the horrible crows that decided to live in the forest around here this year. I despise the sound of those birds. But does anyone know if the fake owls scare off the songbirds too? The crows have done a pretty good job of silencing them but when I drive the crows away with the fake dead crow decoy I have, a few of them venture from the nest and start singing. The crows will eat their eggs and young.

We have a couple out back. They help keep the squirrel population in check. When momma squirrels start popping those babies out, the owls raid the nests at night. Makes a helluva racket!

I have two 100' plus Oak trees, one in my backyard, the other one door down in the front yard, they are about 100 yards apart. We get Owl's nightly in them talking back and forth between the two trees. They patrol our area every night, we see them while soaking in our hot tub. My wife and I love seeing and hearing them. They are big birds, not sure what type of Owl's they are, but they are bitch'in birds. I'm gonna make up a few Owl nesting boxes, the next time I make wood duck nesting boxes. I've researched the dimensions and how to place them already. I just need to find a kid to climb up a 25' extension ladder, those days are over for me.
