For bare metal grates (steel/cast iron) season them the same as a cast iron pan before the first use. Other than that, the grates don't need anything else pre-cook.

Hey what do you use to oil your grates before cooking? Thanks Dave
If Im grilling fish I will spray my grate with some avocado oil or pam depending on what I have. My weber gas grill has stainless steel grates so with fish I find it helps to not stick. Everything else I don't worry about it.

Tip for salmon, or other oil rich fish on a gasser ............ the fish will release itself from the grate when it's time to flip. Just keep checking by trying to lift with your spatula until it raises up easily, then flip.

Yeah with Salmon I don’t need to. With Fish like Ahi, Mahi Mahi and Ono I definitely oil the grates a little.
