They use them on wild animals a lot now for research. Matter of fact, a bunch of wild bears are tagged here in Louisiana. They have found bears traveling from northern Arkansas all the way down the Atchafalaya river to the coast in the winter.......

What is that hanging down from his neck in the photo?
That little fur hang-down on the neck is called a 'bell' and I'll bet what you see is a piece of willow or reed leftover from feeding. Tracking devices are collars with a GPS and normally put on cows to track their migration.

We use tracking collars on all dogs that are used for deer, rabbit, and coon hunting. Makes them much easier to find after the hunt. I didn't really see a collar on that bull in either picture so I wasn't sure what I was seeing...

Interesting...I did not know moose migrate. But why only cows?
They don't migrate huge distances like certain birds do. I think the herd in the Yellowstone area will travel 20 or 30 miles and other herds move shorter distances from one habitat to another.

Monitoring is important for behavioral studies, even things like where do they cross highways, or do they favor a certain stream over another. Maybe cows are easier to collar, or because of their offspring? Good article below.

During mating season he inflates, and during hunting season he deflates.
