Newbie to smoking braving the cold in buffalo to make some great food. Haven't smoked in a long time and just got a new smoker any recommendations on first attempts?

Digging dog I'm a rook to the smoking world any recommendations to start I'm breaking in the smoker this weekend everyone say to start with pork sholder also cravin some beef jerky ever made it?
 
cschmidt, where in B'lo are you?  I grew up in Amherst and Nancy's from Elma.  We're over in CNY now though.

What kind of smoker have you got?
