Hey everyone, my name is Chris, I live in Seattle and have several friends who are way into smoking and I'm hooked. I'm looking to buy my first smoker and I'm torn between a green mountain Pellet grill and a weber smoky mountain. I'd love input from everyone on what they think would be the best choice. Thanks!

, Chris , to the SMF. Glad to have more PNW folks here, keep tuned in and visit your friends often to get the hang of it , then get the smoker of your choice and send Q-view of your cooks.

Have fun and...

Chris... nice to see a fellow moss grower here on the forum!

Couple of things to keep in mind:

Pellet poopers - once you load the hopper you can not change "flavor" wood very easily. You basically have to run it till those pellets are used up. Also if you get one make sure it has the type of temperature adjustment that allows you to set a specific temp - not just "Hi, Med., & Low". The plus side is you click a switch and go.

I have and love the 22.5" WSM. But being the Pac. NW with all our "liquid sunshine" you need either a small deck enclosure to house it in or a covered deck (that's what I have). The WSM has a small footprint but holds a TON of meat at one go, if the weather is at least 55° and not super windy you can run a looooooong time on one load of charcoal with little to no adjustments to the vents.  I purchased a $45 welding blanket and some big metal spring clips (giant clothes pins) and wrap my WSM with it in cold/windy weather, this lets me use it year round regardless of what the weather is doing (even on those ice storm days!).

Best of luck!

Johnny
