Up until this year I could get K in the blue and white bag with with the blue badge on it. That charcoal reminded me of what we used to get back in the day, the new and improved has been out since 2008, I believe. Unless this is the New "New and Improved"? The pic posted in this thread by FLbobecu is the bag I avoid. Ingredient list can be found here-

I've used Stubbs, not to bad in my opinion. Royal Oak lump is good too as is TruCue (Home Depot). Also, if you're smoking you have to use a natural produch without chemical binders, so the only Kingsford to use would be the competition briquetts, or Stubbs, these as far as I know are the only briquetts with natural binders. And of course lump.

Ok a little off subject here but not to far.....

So I go into Menards today to pick up some lawn supplies and you know I had to go down the grill/smoker aisle for no apparent reason but to scratch the itch....

...And I see Royal Oak Steakhouse GB 8lb bags for $3.97, well never seeing it before I thought hell for 4 bucks I'll try it, I tore it open and cranked out a Weber Charcoal starter full to see what it looked like....pretty similiar to RORB IMO.....for 4 bucks a bag if there all like this I'm going back to buy a 100 pounds of it....My menards in Central IL had it on sale for $3.97 until may 31st for any and alls info....
They also had 20 pound twin packs of KBB for 15 bucks.....RORB was 5.79 for 18 pounds....

Well the RO Steakhouse lighted pretty quick, and like regular RO was good in size as for pieces, very little dust, and no foreign material in the bag I bought. The one problem I am having with Lump coal is the little ash floating in my kettle when I lift the lid almost like a piece of newspaper burning. Does anyone else have that effect? It was pretty windy tonight as I was cooking so maybe I had to much draft coming in the kettle stirring up the ash off the Lump as it burned.
It burned hotter, cleaner ( other than the ash floating around ) than KBB, and quite a bit faster than KBB...but there again I feel I get the same kind of temp with a smaller amount of Lump than KBB. I really like the way the Steakhouse lump smelled burning just a nice woodsy smell....the only thing holding me back from buying 100 pounds is the whole ash floating around thing. Any thoughts on that folks?

I agree Rick, Stubbs is just a nice good clean burning less ash producing Briq, I use it alot anymore.....

Thanks,
