A few of you knew I was in a tournament yesterday. Thought I would share the adventure.

HA! Today I took part in another kayak tounament. Instead of following a friend who had a good plan I set out and followed my own. A gutsy move that would have resulted in some serious torment from said friend if I had not had such an incredibly fun and frustrating day,

Set out as the sun rose and the fish were not where I wanted them to be. Got a lil scared but I moved out deeper and soon found some trout. Got into them for a while and did well but this is a slam tournament. A slam tourny requires you to catch 3 fish. 3 different fish! A snook, a Trout and a Refish. The drift continued and soon I was able to find a red. Ok so now I have two of the species. After catching more trout I decided to move over to a whole new spot. I paddled back to my car and threw the yak on the roof and drove off to the river in search of snook

Arrived at the river and found out one thing quick. The snook were not under the dock I had told them to wait at. Off in search I went eventually I ended up in a canal after a close tun in with dolphin feeding.

In the canal I cast out and put my jig near a drain along the seawall. I got a hit and quickly a silver body with a nice black line came rolling on the surface. I got my SNOOK!!! It rolls again and then decided to do a headshaking tailwalk in front of my yak and throws the bucktail back at me! ARGH!!!!!!!! I had the fish I needed on and lost it. I had to bite the tounge hard in order to prevent the whole area of west bradenton from hearing my frustration.

Went off in search of another snook. As I exited the canal I get a thump but no hookup (or so I thought) I start reeling in for another cast. As I thought my jig should be close to me I see my line go flying past me way too fast. I reel tight and set hook again. Drag starts screaming and so do I! Fish On!!! Well here are where the real theatrics start. I was fishing into the current and as I fought this fish I get turned arounf to where the fish is behind me and I am fighting a fish backwards. After a struggle I get turned around and heading towards this snook who has really tortured me. In the process of the fight it had wrapped itself around a piling. My line is tight around the barnacles and I know its going to break soon. I get up along side of this fish knowing it still had fight but there was nothing I could do so I reached under it and tried to grab it. As soon as I made cantact with the snook it went nuts and broke my line. I watched it swim away with my jig in its mouth. AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I was ready to break my rods throw em in the water and scream till I could scream no more. Then I just started to laugh and enjoy the day. Wow what fun! I had a blast although the fish I needed to be in the search for money was lost.... TWICE!!!!
Come to find out that most other people had a similar day (well they didnt lose thier fish) Even if I had caught the snook I would have been just short of third place which was taken by a very deserving friend. Way To Go Sharon!!! You ROCK! Way to kick marks butt as well. AGAIN!!!

Sheesh. Now I know why I don't fish much. Sounds like too much WORK! LOL

But a heckuva story. Kayak tourney? I'd drown or hook a sailfish and end up one of Castro's subjects! <Sailor I ain't>

Vlap, thanks for sharing! I feel your pain/pleasure... I too fish from a yak and it gets tough sometimes trying to land a large fish when they don't want to be landed... plus I use a flyrod.

Great story!

The day was incredible! A plan was formed quickly and came together very well. Fishing canals around docks for a species that is a challenge to land in easy circumstances gets much more difficult in this area. Snook are a blast and always fun to catch. They can frustrate the heck out of you though. Which they did yesterday!
Love that kayak fishing though.

Sounds like fun. I can always go for a good fish fight!

That's why fishing is a sport. It wouldn't be near as fun if never lost one.
It's all part of the excitement.

Thats a universal plan with snook. its simple... bite, run, tangle, break! I love fishing for them but they can be frustrating.

And yes... if you come down here to fish with me... I will try and put you on them.
