Its that time again where I get wild hair up you know what and plan out an insane smoker build. Looking back on all my previous smokers the only thing I havent had is an insulated cabinet stick burner or a gravity feed so I plan to build one or other or maybe combo of both. Due to size needed with our whole hog parties I will be building off the footprint of the Myron Mixon 72 series but with some design changes. One of those is an aggressive looking offroad package. I plan to put it on 30-35" tires and probably 20" rims. All blacked out.

Thing I am having hard time with is coming up with a frame design so thought I would reach out to the forums for help and maybe make a contest if anyone interested. I will venmo $50 to the design that myself and other members think looks the best. It does have to be actually buildable without a waterjet machine.

let me know what you got

Along with the above I had a general question regarding gravity feed smokers. I have built plenty of offset and insulated cabinet but never owned a GF. I have cooked on a few but how dimensional aspect of firebox is calculated is lacking.

Below is typical chute design I pulled off internet. If I am copying the MMS 72 GF design it has a FB of 10x10x7. I believe this to be the dimensions under the slide out grate which the burning coals sit on. My question is since I am using a round chute to prevent bridging what space do I need from the top of the charcoal grate to the chute bottom? This is essentially space with red in below diagram. Once that is determined ill center my chute on this dimension.

I was thinking 3-4" at most but could be wrong.

I've not seen or used a GF... but looking at your pic I am confused on how it keeps from lighting all the charcoal in the chute...Being that it's just stacked up on top of what's burning according to the pic... Kinda just like a charcoal chimney... Just trying to get a clearer picture of how it works...

So then it doesn't feed automatically ? You have to open this sealed door whenever charcoal is needed ?
Sorry for all the questions... But just trying to understand how it works..

You only lift the lid to refill. As the lit coals burn out it turns to ash and drops down into ash pan where wood chunks are smoldering for smoke flavor. Fresh coals will continue to drop down and process is repeated until chute is empty or you can keep refilling.

Its an easier way to refill fuel and keep smoker going on long cookers vs refilling whole charcoal basked on insulated vertical.
