Hello Everyone!

Okay this weekend I was guided kindly by a few folks on throwing a pouch in the grill to add a little smoke to my steaks...

I wish I could find a picture, for this because it is probably easier to see than explain but I will try.

I have a propane grill with a grate, under that a heat sheild thing and then the burners. So I made a pouch and put it under the grate right beside the burner in the corner.

Is there a way to put lava rocks into this type of grill, do I need another grate for that or is my technique good enough?

Thanks!

Aaron

It sounds like you're good to go. Did you get enough smoke? I actually just throw my pouch of wood chips or wood chunks directly on top of the grate, but that's for indirect cooking. My grill also has the heat shields that are reversible--you can turn them upside-down for a "basket" to hold wood chips.

Actually, the first day they were soaked and didn't smoke much, so I just left them in there when I was done and the next day, they were dry and started smoking instantly! But the smoke I could smell both days but couldn't see...

Aaron what you have done is fine. Don't use the lava rocks. No need with a heat shield. The heat shield is what has taken the place of the old lava rocks. It holds and distributes the heat and vaporizies the food dripings wich in turn flavor the food.

If you want you can pick up a smoke box. and you just put your chips in it instead of making a pouch each time. They sell them at walmart for like 6 or 7 bucks. I have one in my grill. Works great. Just an idea thought I would share with you.

Thank you Kookie! I think I actually have one in the basement but thought that was just for major collections of wood and not for doing little bits. I am still super rookie here.. .Thanks you... would you put the box on top of the grill, I don't think it would fit beside the burner?

i have those drip shields on my grill...i use a small disposable aluminum foil pan about small loaf size and put right in the valley between the shields in the valley.. ^...x...^ i use soake chips in foil with holes poked in it..i put in as i light the grill to preheat..works nice while grilling steaks
