My first smoke and it was thighs

I smoked chicken thighs for my first attempt and it was so-so. I used pecan and only added about 1/2 cup. It literally smoked the entire three hours it cooked on that on tiny bit. I was thinking it would smoke for about 1 hour only. The smoke on the meat was pretty strong. Did it smoke so long because of the wood type or just too much?
 
Both can do that but pecan usually doesn't so I would guess to much. Remember your looking for TBS (thin blue smoke) or just the smell of the wood burning. If you can smell it so can what your smoking

What type of cooker were you smoking on? What temps were you running at?
