South Louisiana-Yes, it is HOT
Last one I cut lasted me about 3 years. This one is about the same size tree, about 8" diameter at the base, so should last about as long. It was leaning over the road after a severe storm rolled through, partly hung up on a pine tree.....needed to come down. Perfect timing being I am out of wild black cherry wood for the smokehouse. I kept even the small branches 3/4" diameter. These will dry the fastest, and limbs up to about 3" in diameter have the most flavor compounds anyway.

Will wait for a cool fall day to cut up into smaller chunks. Nice fall project outside while smoking some meats...

It is nice to have a spot to cut. I have not bought smoke wood in over 15 years. I can get white and red oak, pecan, hickory and wild black cherry. Don't really need anything else....
Oak is everywhere here. I need to hit up the apple and peach farms out east to see what they do with their culls of trees.

I am loaded with apple and oak right now. Have three hickory trees will be cutting down next week. If anyone in SW MO needs some hickory just let me know.
Thats nice. You are about an hour north of me. I got plenty of firewood/smoking wood here.
Living that close to Branson, you probably just love the traffic! 😂

About all I have access to in my little slice of heaven is alder. I'd probably run a stick burner if I had ready access to actual chunk wood like you guys.

IDS, I cut up two this spring for my woodstove , I'll be warm this winter ! I have a glass front on the stove and the flames off black cherry are full of different colors from my usual beech, maple and yellow birch.
