Ok this is my third time smoking and I am praying my mods will give me more success than I have had so far. I installed a real temp gauge, two dampers and removed the legs to help me control air flow. Yea it is looking a little ugly with all the foil but it seems to hold off the gaps that exist for now. Any better ideas?

Morning Raed; I think those are solid for now.

I would buy a gasket to go around the lid. Glue it on with some high temp RTV. The gaskets are available at hardware stores, home depot etc and online at amazon. As far as the bottom end, I think I would do it like that to be sure it works the way you want it to.

Have you done any mods to the charcoal pan? (grate in the bottom, air holes)

If you like the legs off method, maybe get some patio blocks or something to put down so you don't have to seal around the bottom?

I don't suppose you boil checked the thermo before you bolted it on? The one I put on mine is still 25 degrees off... not a good mod for me. I bought the maverick ET-732. Best investment for a mod that I made. Gotta know the IT of the meat, cause that matters the most.

Also, don't overload the charcoal pan, otherwise you will go through the roof on the temps.

Keep us posted. What are you smoking?

mine:

gasket, vent/damper (leave wide open) and after market thermo

foiled water pan with foiled smaller size cobble stone, instead of water

grate in bottom of charcoal pan, 4 holes drilled below grate on each side to allow for pan to breath and allow air up under coals.

if you used a couple more of those pavers, I don't think you would need the foil... but you could always glue a gasket on the outside or inside with high heat RTV and leave some  of it below the bottom on the ECB so that when you set it down it would seal up the bottom. But I really don't know, i don't think anyone has tried that yet.

No mods on the pan maybe my next step. I used the extra pavers we had laying around from our patio to build a "bowl" for the charcoal pan to rest in the foil is to keep the patio clean but seems to be sealing well also. I will have to look into a gasket for the lid, thanks for the tip. I did not boil check the gauge but I did test it in the oven was spot on! I am making ribs today. Will post some photos in a few hours
